Scott

Luke stumbled as he was pushing the stroller. It was a stunning day, with neon blue skies and brilliant white puffball clouds hanging in the distance, almost like they weren’t real. The park near the river in Hawthorne wasn’t as nice as the one in Cherry Hollow, or at least I didn’t think so, but it wasn’t bad, either. Sophia, for her part, was sleeping soundly in the stroller, missing it all, so I wasn’t really sure what the point of taking her anywhere could be when she was a lump this small, but Luke was determined.

“Are you sure about this? You look super wrecked, and I mean that in the nicest way possible.”

He sent me a halfhearted glare. “Yeah. All the baby websites say it’s good for them to get out into the air and such. So I’ve been doing this every day. When it’s winter we won’t be able to get her out as easily.”

Hell. I felt bad just looking at Luke. Out here in the sun he looked even worse than he had in the apartment, especially since his scruff caught the sunlight and glittered on his cheeks. The paved path went beside the river, dotted with tiny red leaves that had blown off the trees during a storm last night. They drifted lazily by. Fall was coming. It was still warm, but it was there, in the air. You could tell it would get cold tonight. Shivering, I turned toward him and tried to think of something to say, but he was so dead on his feet he wasn’t paying much attention to anything except not steering the stroller off the path.

“Do you want me to push her for a while?”

“No, it’s fine.”

“Oh.”

He jerked his head around to look at me and then let out a small laugh. “If you really want to.” We stopped and switched spots, and it was weird. I hadn’t thought I’d be doing this, so I had trouble swallowing for a few seconds. Sophia protested the stop by letting out a little grunt, and I started up again to try to stall out any crying. She seemed to like to do that.

When Luke didn’t immediately take up a conversation, I amused myself by pointing out various wildflowers along the path. “Those are goldenrod, Sophia,” I said, even though I was pretty sure she was sleeping. “Those are wild tiger lilies. They’ll be dead soon. Oh, and there are blackberries. I’m surprised they still have fruit. Birds like them.” We went on that way for a while, and eventually Luke began to chuckle.

“What?”

“Did you swallow an encyclopedia?”

I glared. “No, I was a Scout.”

“Of course you were.” His eyes twinkled, and I glowered.

“You don’t think I could be a Boy Scout?”

“I don’t think you’d do well with a pack of other boys running around, no. You don’t like people that much.”

I shrugged. “Why do you think I know the names of all the plants?”

At that, he did let out a laugh that echoed across the water, and my stomach got funny and warm in a way I hadn’t ever felt before.
